Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Expect and How to Care for Your Lips

Lip filler aftercare is an important part of achieving a smooth, natural-looking result. It is completely normal for your lips to look fuller, feel tender, and have some swelling or bruising immediately after treatment. The key is to be gentle with your lips and give them time to settle.

The first 24–48 hours

After your lip filler appointment, avoid touching, pressing, or massaging your lips unless your practitioner has specifically advised you to. Keep the area clean and avoid applying makeup directly over injection points for the time recommended by your practitioner.

A cool compress, wrapped in a clean cloth, may help soothe swelling—never apply ice directly to the skin. Drink plenty of water, keep your head slightly elevated when you sleep, and try to avoid anything that creates extra heat or pressure around the lips.

• Alcohol

• Saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers

• Facials, facial massage, or dental treatment

• Kissing or anything that puts pressure on the lips

What is normal after lip filler?

Mild swelling, tenderness, redness, small bruises, and temporary unevenness are all common after lip filler. Your lips may look more dramatic at first, so do not judge your final result immediately. Most swelling starts to settle within a few days, while your lips can take around two weeks to fully settle.

When should you contact your practitioner?

If you are concerned at any point, contact your practitioner promptly. Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe or worsening pain, unusual colour changes to the skin, blistering, increasing swelling, signs of infection, or any changes to your vision.

If you develop sudden swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat, have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or feel faint, call 999 immediately.
